The Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, Dr. Jelena Begović, inaugurated the international conference titled Belgrade BioInformatics Conference 2024 – BelBi 2024, held at the Metropol Palace Hotel.
The conference is organized by the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGE) in collaboration with institutes and faculties from the Universities of Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Kragujevac, as well as national scientific societies.
BelBi 2024 is dedicated to the application of bioinformatics systems, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in molecular biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, bioengineering, and pharmacology. In addition to researchers from the Republic of Serbia, the conference brings together leading experts in bioinformatics from several European countries, as well as from the United States and the People’s Republic of China.
This year’s program also includes an exhibition on bioinformatics, which attendees can visit throughout the conference.
"Machine learning significantly boosts productivity in the development of bioinformatics tools," stated Dr. Begović, highlighting the importance of artificial intelligence in the advancement of bioinformatics and the need for bioinformaticians to harness the potential that AI offers. "Bioinformatics has the power to improve human health and safety, preserve the environment, and unlock the potentials of life itself," she noted. "The future will bring further development of these technologies, and they will continue to find applications in research and development, and beyond", the minister said.
"The Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, and the Government of the Republic of Serbia recognize the importance of these fields and are committed to further supporting science, particularly biotechnology, information and communication technologies, and their integration with artificial intelligence," the minister said, reminding that Serbia has a State Data Center that has made its capacities available to science."We have begun the construction of the BIO4 Campus, a platform where biotechnology, information technology, and artificial intelligence will collaborate. This is the largest single investment in science and scientific infrastructure in Serbia, demonstrating our commitment to creating a future where science and technology will thrive", concluded Dr. Begović, wishing the attendees a successful conference.
